In my early 20’s, I printed out a cute graphic that said “You Have As Many Hours In The Day As Beyonce” and taped it in front of my desk. This was 2016, Beyonce had just dropped “Lemonade” on the unsuspecting world to shock and acclaim, and girlboss culture was at its arguable peak.
This was my encouragement to myself. I can be Beyonce. I can “dream it, work hard, grind til I own it.” And I did, for a long time.
Here’s a hard-earned lesson of my baby adulthood: I don’t, in fact, have as many hours in the day as Beyonce. Beyonce has more resources than me. She has incomprehensible wealth and teams of people to manage her affairs. Her daily 24 hours are freer than mine by default. Believing (perhaps deluding) that I could achieve at Beyonce levels did give me a lot to show for myself, but it also gave me pretty severe burnout.
(Beyonce, forgive me, I have girlbossed too close to the sun.)
