What to Expect at a Suzuki Violin Lesson
A bow.
We begin each violin lesson and group class by taking a bow together. This is how we say “hello” and enter the learning experience.
A chat.
We like to catch up by learning a little about the child. Their day, what they did over the weekend, etc. We’ll also ask how practice went during the week so we can address any confusion or struggles you may have had.
A warm-up.
Singing, playing a scale, or picking a few Twinkles are ways to get our musical juices flowing at the beginning of our session. We may also do some bow hold exercises or check on our playing posture.
Review and Fundamentals
Part of why Suzuki kids get so good is because they are always deepening their learning with songs they already know. We continue the warm up with review to keep honing our skills.
The Working Piece
Next, we’ll check in on our “working piece” - the song that we’re in the process of learning, but haven’t finished yet.
Assignments, and another bow.
The lesson ends with a prescriptive practice assignment for the next week, with time for the child and parent to try it out and ask questions. We complete the lesson with another bow to say “goodbye.”
